NEW CHANGES IN THE CCW LAW EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 05TH, 2018

Carrying a concealed handgun is a privilege in Ohio.  With this privilege comes great responsibility to be aware, not only of the common sense rules of safe firearm handling, but the applicable laws that affect how, when and where you may carry your firearm along with the proper use of the firearm to defend yourself or another person.

Application Process

Ohio Law prohibits possession of a firearm while within a government building, to include the Sheriff’s Office.  Please do NOT possess a firearm when applying for or picking up your license at our Office.

 To qualify for a CCW in Ohio, you must:

  •     Be at least 21 years of age.
  •     Complete a required training course, compliant with Ohio Revised Code Section 2923, and obtain a Certificate of Competency.

 First-Time Applicants:

  •     Complete a CCW application.
  •     Have a color photo, passport size 2"x2", taken within the last 30 days.
  •     Have a valid identification, driver's license, state I.D., or passport.
  •     Pass a criminal background check and mental competency check.
  •     Have an original Certificate of Competency or Prior Equivalent Documentation.
  •     Pay the non-refundable fee: Cash (exact change only) or Credit/Debit Cards are accepted:
    •         $67.00 New
    •         $37.00 Emergency
  •         An additional $10.00 fee will be charged for a FBI Background Check if you have not been an Ohio resident for the last 5 years.
  •         An additional $5.00 fee will be charged to applicants who do not provide their own photograph.
  •     Have your fingerprints electronically scanned or ink rolled.

 Active Duty/Retired Active Duty/Honorably Discharged Military

  •     Complete a CCW application.
  •     Have a color photo, passport size 2"x2", taken within the last 30 days Have a valid identification, driver's license, state I.D., or passport.
  •     Pass a criminal background check and mental competency check.
  •     Provide proof of active duty status: Orders and/or Military ID Card.
  •     If retired/discharged a copy of your DD214.
  •     All fees and training will be waived for qualified applicants.


 Retired Law Enforcement

  •     Complete a CCW application.
  •     Have a color photo, passport size 2"x2", taken within the last 30 days.
  •     Have a valid identification, driver's license, state I.D., or passport.
  •     Pass a criminal background check and mental competency check.
  •     Provide proof of Ohio Peace Officer Certification.
  •     Provide proof of retirement: SF401, Retirement System Documents.
  •     All fees and training will be waived for qualified applicants.

 Renewal Applicants:

  •     Complete a CCW application.
  •     Have a color photo, passport size 2"x2", taken within the last 30 days.
  •     Have a valid identification, driver's license, state I.D., or passport.
  •     Pass a criminal background check and mental competency check.
  •     Pay the non-refundable fee: Cash (exact change only) or Credit/Debit Cards are accepted:
    •         $50.00 Renewal
    •         An additional $10.00 fee will be charged for a FBI Background Check if you have not been an Ohio resident for the last 5 years.
    •         An additional $5.00 fee will be charged to applicants who do not provide their own photograph.
  •     Have your fingerprints electronically scanned or ink rolled.

 Processing Time

Applications are processed within the mandated forty-five (45) day processing period and are dependent upon the return of BCI/FBI background check information.
